2013- 2014 School Year Welcome To Our 3rd Grade Classroom Community Of Learners! Mrs. Nedin’s motto is “each child working to his or her potential!” Passionate about differentiating instruction to meet the needs of each student, she believes that one size does not fit all in the classroom. Mrs. Nedin advocates that it’s a teacher’s job to meet the needs of each student individually, academically, emotionally and socially. She loves being part of a school that shares in her philosophy!
Mrs. Nedin attended Rider University in Lawrenceville New Jersey, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education along with a second degree in Theater. Mrs. Nedin is certified in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida to teach grades Kindergarten though sixth. She also holds a teaching certificate to teach English Language Learners in Florida. Mrs. Nedin is originally From Jupiter, Florida and moved to the Keys four years ago to join the Key West Botanical Garden Education Department, where she served as Education Manager. Before living in the Keys, she taught 1st grade for eight years in Palm Beach County and has also taught 5th grade, 4th grade, 1st grade and kindergarten in the North Penn School District in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Nedin has four children, one who just completed Drexel University graduate school, and three children at Key West High School. During her time off she enjoys spending time with her husband and children. She also enjoys animal rescue, native flora and fauna, traveling, boating, motorhome camping, karaoke, Disney, cooking, eating sushi and playing with her four brussels griffons: Tater-Tot, Dippin-Dot, Hopey-Hope and Sproutyy- Sprout. She also volunteers as a board member at the Key West Botanical Garden. Mrs. Nedin can’t wait to lead her “school” of barracudas to success this school year!
Our Curriculum Science- Throughout the year, the students will investigate three major science units: The Study of the Universe, The Study of the Earth, and The Study of the Sea. Integrated into all of our science units is the process of inquiry: knowing how to ask questions, conduct investigations and research, share results, and ponder new questions. We will partner with local organizations such as Fort Zachary Taylor and Reef Relief for field experiences. The school year will culminate with students presenting their scientific knowledge at a Kids Inquiry Conference. Reading- Barracuda students participate in workshops with mini lesson where we use a mentor text to drive the lesson. A mentor text is a text whose ideas and structure can be used to inspire writing or reading. For example, during Readers Workshop we might read Thank You Mr Falker to elicit schema, make personal connections to text and compare and contrast as we read. We may also discuss what the author’s purpose was, when she wrote the text. Students also participate in leveled reading groups, and literacy centers as part of tour unique reading program. Writing-During Writers Workshop we could use the same text (Thank You Mr. Falker) to highlight how authors craft a title to serve as a doorway into a story or how to use our experiences as a springboard for writing. We will also integrate science into our writing, as we research and then write informational non-fictional text based on our findings. We will also use " Writer's Notebooks" to grow as writers, document our "seed ideas" and "sprout" our ideas! Math- We currently use the Go Math! Florida math curriculum as one of our math resources. While students are working independently at math centers, Mrs. Nedin leads differentiated math lessons with small groups or individual students. Students will also work to improve their automaticity by participating in Rocket Math. Students in third grade will focus on addition and subtraction with regrouping, place value to one hundred thousand, multiplication, division, geometry, angles, measurement to the nearest quarter inch, perimeter, time to the nearest minute and fractions. Social Studies- We use holidays, news events and literature as a springboard for learning. This school year we will learn about a variety of cultures and holidays during our "Holiday's Around The World" study. We also use a variety of text to learn about the world, including National Geographic for Kids and Scholastic News. Learning is integrated.
